Hi Craig

You are an inspiration and obviously have a strong, determined character - well done!

Thankfully now, schools are a bit more sensitive but there are still some with old fashioned stick-in-the-mud approaches to dyslexia.

Not sure if you mean a formal dyslexia assessment or one for the glasses? If the latter, go to the Irlen website (link is on the post) as they have centres across the country. If you are talking about the dyslexia assessment, you can try the online one via the link on the top right of the page to give you an idea. Or, go straight for the type that Kara had which is more formal and thorough. These are not cheap though but you may get it cheaper by contacting your nearest University that has a Psychology department as they love guinea pigs!! Also, look at the British Dyslexia Association pages they probably have some links. In the meantime, I have a few contacts in London who specialise in reading deficits and will ask them for your nearest options and email you privately.

hi this program shocked me so so much because of the way we are so alike everything she was doing i do but never put it down to dyslexia, i got told i had dyslexia when i was about 10 about 18 years ago now,so for the first 6 years in school i was the "lazy boy in class" i hid my dyslexia well through high school(probably not the best idea but it was the only one i had at the time)help classes and a teacher as a scribe was not an option in my school, luckily i was well liked and bullying was not a problem.
i think kara was very brave doing a show like that and it helped me in more ways than i can say cos its nice to know your not the only one, i think im like you said a compensated dyslexic because i learned next to nothing all through school but found a way round it, im now 28 and self employed and i have a great business brain and have always known how to make money, (except the time i was a dyslexic PIMP and bought a warehouse) hey im aloud to joke :-) but i still struggle with reading and wrighting/spelling.
im interested in getting an assessment if you have any info that whould be great i live in ***** in scotland
thanks craig

Nina, you can not just 'buy' these without an assessment. It may be that they won't work for your daughter and you would have wasted your money. As a rough guide, about 50% of dyslexics have visual stress problems.

Follow the links on the post for Irlen as they have test centres across the UK. The other option is of course to get some of the coloured overlays as if any of these helps your daughter you can be more certain the glasses will help.

Good luck!

That's fascinating that a colored lens can help with dyslexia. I've never heard that one before. Where can you get these lenses? Do they cause any eye problems?

<em>Not as far as I am aware. I would think they actually reduce eye strain but please check with your optician.

I'm so glad you have finally found out you are not stupid, it's just a shame you didn't find this out much earlier. Unfortunately, it's only been in the last 15 years that reading deficits have been taken seriously in most schools. It would be great if the schools also had the money and resources to treat these deficits on an individual basis, as you can't just put everyone in a single pot.

I think the program illustrated the differences between dyslexics. Whether Kara's problem was just due to visual stress was unclear; the old argument, symptom or cause comes in here. But that's another story.

That she was brave enough to go on national TV and expose herself in that way is truly commendable. She is what I would probably call a compensated dyslexic, as you may be. This just means that you have learned to cope with the problem and use strategies that compensate for the deficits whether you consciously realise this or not.

If you have dyslexia, you will not be 'cured' so to speak, but you can learn (and probably have) to cope depending on the level of problem you have. Remember who else is dyslexic, Richard Branson for example, and so was Winston Churchill! You are in the same place as some very clever people, so don't despair. Look at the positive things in your life and I'm sure there are plenty.

I would still recommend you get a formal assessment (like Kara), as it will give you a lot of 'light bulb' moments!! I understand how this may make you feel, but it's the best way to let you understand why you may have problems with numbers, spelling and organisation as well as reading.

Sorry, I ramble!! All the best..........

This program was very well put across and it has helped me understand dyslexia. Iv always told myself i was stupid because iv lived with it since young and now 64. It has made me feel so much better, but not cured.
